What we do

Full Scale Dynamics was incorporated in November 2008 by three internationally leading UK  academics: Professors James Brownjohn, Aleksandar Pavic and Paul Reynolds. This was prompted by unprecedented growth in industrially-related applied research and consultancy work over the preceding 10 years.

Alex, James and Paul have worked on over 200 commercial research and consultancy projects over the last 25 years. These projects have involved:

  • dynamic testing and analytical modelling,
  • short and long-term vibration monitoring (SHM),
  • vibration serviceability assessment,
  • vibration mitigation using passive and active control, and
  • design and management for vibration serviceability

Prof Aleksandar Pavic
Focused on vibration performance of civil engineering structures. His particular expertise is in vibration serviceability of slender civil engineering structures, such as long-span floors, footbridges and grandstands, which are occupied and dynamically excited by humans. He is world authority on vibration serviceability who wrote key vibration serviceability guidelines use in the UK and internationally and provided consulting services over the last 20 years to dozens of returning clients.

Paul has carried out extensive analysis and testing work in vibration serviceability for more than 20 years. His particular specialism is control of human-induced vibrations in civil structures. He recently developed a bespoke active vibration control system for a concert venue; the first of its kind worldwide.

James’ research interests include structural health monitoring; instrumentation for measuring position, displacement and acceleration; finite element model updating; modal testing of extreme structures; operational modal analysis; measuring and modelling dynamic loading on structures; effects of crowd and group synchronisation; dynamic performance of extreme low-vibration environments. Within Full Scale Dynamics he specialises in structural monitoring, vibration assessments of unusual structures including extreme low-vibration facilities, structural design to minimise effects of ground borne vibration and vibration serviceability assessment of footbridges. He is Fellow of IMechE and IStructE, Vice President of International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure. He maintains professional and academic links in Far East, particularly Singapore.
